Choosing Durable Finishes for Humidity

Humidity Is the Quiet Test Every Finish Fails or Passes

Ghana’s climate is hard on coatings in a way that has nothing to do with how a finish looks on day one. Sustained high humidity, coastal salt air, and a long rainy season work on a coating constantly — lifting adhesion where the surface was not properly prepared, feeding mould on porous or unsuitable finishes, and dulling colour on binders that were never UV-stable. A finish that looked perfect at handover can be marked, mouldy, or peeling within a season if it was chosen for appearance alone.

Coralex Painters has specified finishes for Ghana’s conditions across Accra, Tema, Takoradi, Kumasi, and Lomé since 1984. Choosing well for humidity is less about the colour and more about the binder, the sheen, and the surface beneath.

What Humidity Actually Does to a Coating

Choosing for Wet and Humid Spaces

Interiors and Wet Rooms

In bathrooms, kitchens, and humid interiors, choose a washable satin or semi-gloss over a porous flat. The sheen gives a cleanable, non-porous surface that resists mould and wipes clean — a flat emulsion in a wet room marks, harbours growth, and cannot be cleaned without burnishing. Where hygiene matters, an anti-microbial coating inhibits mould growth on the surface as part of the strategy — though it never replaces addressing the moisture source first.

Exteriors and Coastal Air

For exterior walls, a UV-stable waterborne acrylic with good chalk resistance holds colour through the glare and rain. Near the coast — Accra, Tema, Takoradi — exposed steel needs a corrosion system specified to the right ISO 12944 category, because salt air drives corrosion that a wall coating cannot stop.

The Surface Still Decides

No finish, however well chosen for humidity, survives over active damp. Moisture trapped behind a coating blisters and peels it from underneath. Before choosing a finish for a humid space, the moisture source is found and addressed, the surface dried and prepared — then the right system is specified onto it. Get that order wrong and the best coating in Ghana still fails.
