An architect’s painting specification is a contract, not a suggestion. It names systems, substrates, preparation grades, film builds, and finishes, and it expects each one delivered as written. The difficulty for the design team is that most decorating contractors treat the specification as a starting price rather than a binding document — they substitute products to protect margin, skip the preparation the specification assumes, and arrive at handover with a finished surface but no evidence that what is behind it matches the drawings.
That gap exposes the architect.
